About Us

The Olathe Gem and Mineral Society (OGMS), founded in 1956, is a Kansas City area/regional organization with membership ranging from amateur hobbyists to professionals, and comprising all ages from elementary school students to retirees.  The OGMS is interested in, and dedicated to, the advancement, education and enjoyment of the Earth Sciences and related subjects.  Scope of member’s interests include, but are not limited to, fossils, mineralogy, lapidary, jewelry arts, geology, field trips/collecting, artifacts, etc.  Our members bring great and welcome diversity, curiosity and shared expertise to our activities and meetings.

The OGMS (Olathe Gem and Mineral Society) is a nonprofit 501(c)3 corporation.  Our  club meets monthly (except June, July and Aug. — reserved for family vacations) on the first Thursday of each month, organizes an annual picnic in June, and hosts a holiday party in December.   Additionally we organize and sponsor periodic field trips, host this website (as well as a Facebook page), and attend as delegates and interested individuals various local, regional and national related conferences/shows.  The club is a member of the Rocky Mountain Federation of Mineralogical Societies (RMFMS), and by this association also a member of the parent American Federation of Mineralogical Societies (AFMS).  Locally we belong to the Association of Earth Science Clubs of Greater Kansas City and, along with the other seven association entities, participate in the development, organization and production of the Annual Gem & Mineral Show each spring.
